Artist Statement

These works come from a place of vulnerability and open-mindedness. My goal going into them was to let my paintbrush guide me through the painting without any thoughts of my own, however, my over-active brain and emotional influence took over. This guidance brought me to a place of reflection in my relationships and I use painting as a map to navigate them. As a result, they became what I call, emotional energy paintings, to reflect the raw reactions and emotions I feel within my relationships. Through these paintings, I hope to transfer my energy to the viewer through my use of texture and expressive colour and shape.

Connection and understanding are the purposes of humankind. Finding it is the goal. Connection to family, to a lover, to a friend. How does one obtain it? How does one keep it once it has been formed? To fully understand, there needs to be exploration, openness, and compromise, but what happens when something blocks us from that? What if there are guards up against connection? How do those guards function within a relationship? These are questions I explore within my work as I try to emulate the relationships I hold close to myself.
